THANK YOU to everyone who volunteered for the Fall Feast.  It was a great success. The students had a great time and the food was wonderful.  We could not have done it without your help.  Micanopy Middle School always appreciates the time and effort our parents give us, it helps make our school such a success.

INTERIM REPORTS will be sent home with students on December 7^th.

WINTER HOLIDAY begins with a ½ day on Friday, December 16th at 12:00, through January 2^nd.  Classes will resume on January 3^rd.  Have a wonderful Holiday.

NEW STUDENT OPENINGS  MMS has openings for new students in all grades.  If you know anyone who is interested in sending their child to our school, please have them call.

TRANSPORTATION   If you have not paid the Transportation Donation for the month of November, please send it in with your child.  December donations are due before the Christmas Break.  Thank you for helping us provide transportation for our students.

Progress reports were sent home with students on Tuesday, September 27^th.

PTO meeting will be on Tuesday, October 18^th at 6:00 pm.  We are in need of parent volunteers for the Micanopy Fall Festival, and the Thanksgiving Day Feast.

A reading contest is being held at the school.  The goal is for each student to read 40 books this year.  That works out to an average of 4 books per month.  The student who has read the highest number of books will be rewarded as will the class which has read the highest number.  Please encourage your children to participate.

FIELD TRIPS

The 8th and 9th grade field trip is planned for Wednesday, May 25th at Camp Kulaqua in
High Springs. The cost of the trip is $10.00. Money and permission slips must be turned
in by Friday, May 20th. All the information regarding the trip is on the permission slip.

The Good Behavior field trip with Ms. Bogans has been postponed. Information will be
coming soon.

END OF YEAR SCHEDULE

8th grade has a ½ day on Friday May 27th. The bus will bring your child home if they
normally ride.
9th graders last day of school will be Friday, May 27th. (Full day for 9th grade)
School will be closed on Monday, May 30th for the Memorial Day holiday.
There will be ½ days on Friday, June 3rd, Monday, June 6th and Tuesday, June 7th
All ½ days end after lunch at 12:00 pm.
Tuesday June 7th is the last day of school. Have a wonderful Summer.

GRADUATION

Graduation ceremonies will be Tuesday, May 31st at 6:00 pm at YMCA Camp
McConnell. Congratulations to our Graduates.

Spring is here again! That means there are a lot of things happening in the next few
months and parents are encouraged to volunteer when needed and help to make it a
wonderful end of year for our students.

On Friday March 25th students will be off for a teacher work day/student holiday. Spring
break begins the following week from Monday March 28th through Friday April 1st.
Enjoy the beautiful spring weather.

PTO MEETING

There will be a PTO meeting on Wednesday March 23rd to discuss graduation and any
other end of year activities. We encourage you to attend, particularly the 8thgrade
parents, since parents are needed to help organize.

YEARBOOK ADS

If you are interested in putting an ad in the yearbook or know anyone who would be
interested please call Noel at the school.

OPEN HOUSE

MMS will be having an open house on Wednesday March 23rd from 4:00-6:00 and on
Saturday April 9th from 10:00-12:00. We encourage you to come and meet the teachers.

GRAD ADVENTURE

This year Grad Adventure will take place on Friday May 20th. We are in need of
chaperones if we are going to participate. At this point we do not have enough volunteers
for this event and we are asking that you consider volunteering for this annual tradition..
If you are interested in chaperoning we will need to know by March 24th. The fee is also
due by this date so Disney World can book us. The cost of the trip will be $100.00 per
student if all students go. The cost could rise if any of the students choose not to go. This
will cover the cost of the charter bus and the entrance fee. This will be the last year that
Disney World will host Grad Adventure Nights.

Dear Parents:

Due to the governor’s budget proposal, K-12 schools could lose $703 per pupil, which amounts to a reduction over $49,000 to Micanopy Middle School (on back).  Micanopy Middle School is only one of the few charter schools that provide transportation for its students.  This is possible through funding donated to the school by the parents.  Micanopy Middle School will continue to provide this service, however, the number of stops will be reduced by half beginning the 1st of March.  The following is the revised list of bus stops that will take effect then:

Governor’s budget would cut K-12 spending per pupil by $703

Florida Gov. Rick Scott’s budget has the Alachua County Public Schools crying foul but the University of Florida breathing a sigh of relief.

SCOTT’S BUDGET BY THE NUMBERS

$703: Proposed cut in per student funding.
$19 million: Estimated cut to Alachua County Public Schools.
$6 million: Amount paid by teachers into the retirement fund.
$13 million: Total estimated cut to Alachua County schools.
$867 million: Estimated cut in school property taxes.

Scott’s budget would spare state universities from deep cuts aside from reductions to employee benefits, while slashing funding for K-12 schools. He proposes cutting per-pupil spending by $703 and total K-12 spending by at least $1.75 billion.

Alachua County Public Schools officials say Scott’s budget could cripple a system already using stimulus money, reserves and an additional mill to close budget gaps. Superintendent Dan Boyd estimates the proposal, if enacted, would amount to $13 million in cuts after a refund of $6 million in pension payments.

“That’s going to be a significant hardship on the district in light that we’ve been cut so much since the 2007-2008 school year,” he said.

Scott also proposes requiring state employees, including teachers, to start paying 5 percent of their salaries into their retirement accounts. Teachers union president Karen McCann said that amounts to a pay cut for employees who are already underpaid.

Starting January 24, 2011, the school will include in its curriculum an enrichment class that is designed
to prepare the students for the upcoming FCAT. This class will focus on reading comprehension and
mathematical skills; concomitantly, the students may address homework and/or make-up work. Due to
the augmentation of the curriculum, the school’s day shall also be extended. Dismissal will be at 2:44 pm
everyday beginning January 24, 2011; subsequently, the bus schedule in the afternoons will be extended
approximately thirty minutes as well. The starting time for the school day shall remain the same. We
apologize for any inconvenience, but we feel this change in curriculum will best serve the students and the
school as well.

This nine weeks 45 students made the honor roll.  Never in the school’s history has the percentage of students making the honor roll been so high.  Another outstanding accomplishment featured four of our students made 4.0.  They are:

The school has become a victim of its own success.  Because of  the huge number of students making the honor roll, the school will only cover the cost for breakfast and transportation.  We are asking the parents to cover the cost for the movie which will be selected subsequently.

THANKSGIVING DAY FEAST

On November 23^rd we will be having our annual Thanksgiving Day Feast.  Please return the flyer with your food assignments as soon as possible.  School will be out at 11:30 am.  There will be no after school care and so parents must be here to pick up your children.  The bus service will still be available at 11:30 for those students who ride.  There will be no school Nov. 24^th for a pupil/teacher holiday and Nov. 25^th & 26^th for the Thanksgiving Holidays.

DONATIONS

• Just  a reminder, MMS has been accepting food donations for 2 local families for Thanksgiving.  Any donations you could give would be greatly appreciated.  Donations must be in by November 18^th.

• MMS has also been accepting donations for the soldiers in Afghanistan.  Please help show them our appreciation.  A list of items that are needed have been sent home with the students.  The deadline for bringing in donations is Dec. 10^th.  For more information call the school.

The next PTO meeting is scheduled for next Tuesday, Oct. 12 at 6:00 pm.  Please come, we need your support!

Volunteer Schedule

• We need volunteers all day Sat. Oct.30 (8:00 am to 5:00 pm) and Sun. Oct.31 8:00 am to 4:00 pm) at the corner of Seminary Ave. and Division St.  We need at least one adult and several students.  Job duties will be to make sure no cars park in this area.  Make sure the people parking cars behind O’Briskys Book Shop keep the barricades in place the cars leaving the parking lot exit on Ocala Ave. and Division St.  Students will hand out programs.

• We need volunteers for the Bake Sale Booth Sat. and Sun.
• We need donations of baked goods and drinks (can soda and water bottles)
• No brownies please! Items will be sold for $1.00 each so all items should be wrapped for easy handling and sale.
